TMJ

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint is where your jaw connects to your skull. It is the hinge that allows you to chew food, speak, and make facial expressions. Because of how frequently the joint is used and the attachments between the jaw and the skull, the risk of pain and discomfort is higher than for most other joints in the body.

What Causes TMJ Pain and Discomfort?

Any time the lower jaw is out of alignment with the upper jaw, you will experience TMJ pain and discomfort. Misalignment can be caused by grinding your teeth when you sleep, an alteration in your bite pattern, a dislocation of the lower jaw, or inflammation from a neck injury. If left untreated, this can cause permanent wear patterns on both your teeth and jawbones. This will make it harder to correct the problem once it is identified. As soon as you feel any discomfort in the TMJ area, schedule an appointment with our chiropractor to get it taken care of.

How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Our chiropractor uses adjustments, heat therapy, massage, and joint mobilization therapy to re-align a patient’s jaws so that they come together as naturally as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment will prevent long-term chronic pain and discomfort. A key element of chiropractic care is uncovering the cause of your pain. If the cause is found, a treatment plan can be created that addresses the issue and prevents further damage from occurring.

Preventing TMJ Pain

The key to preventing TMJ pain and discomfort is early diagnosis and treatment. Re-establishing the alignment of the jaw and bite patterns is essential for healing to begin and your symptoms to gradually be eliminated. Regular dental visits are needed to ensure that your teeth are in good condition and are aligned properly. Regular visits to our chiropractor will ensure that your musculoskeletal structure is also in proper alignment.
